  • Full Disclosure: The Incident

I've been on the fence about posting about this.  And I'll probably regret it.  But if a top-5 most important life moment doesn't end up on my blog, then what's the point.

One week ago today I had a seizure.  Kind of a big deal.  I was doing the elliptical at the gym, and then boom, woke up on an ambulance.  Nothing like that had ever happened to me before.  The following is what I wrote that night and the next day in the form of a "private" blog post.  Since I haven't had any problems since *fingers crossed*, I figured I might as well share now.  Oh, and I've got a neurologist appointment Friday, so double *fingers crossed*.

From A Week Ago: Okay, since I've decided to keep this private, today was the day of the seizure.  I hadn't had a good night's sleep in a few nights.  I had to drink coffee at work even.  I had a weird day at work where I was constantly laughing and wanting to play pranks.

Then, I went to the gym after work.  I was planning to get in a quick workout on the treadmill and then head to Silva's for the UT-LSU College Baseball World Series Game.  I remember being at about 8 minutes left on the treadmill.  Then I remember a few flashes of the chick at the gym's face over me.  Then the ambulance came.

When I first got in the ambulance, I couldn't remember anything from my short-term memory.  It was like a dream.  Not what day it was, nothing about work, nothing.  But I knew stuff that was in my long term memory.  I told the ambulance guy my lock combination at the gym.  They brought me to the hospital.  I had my Aquaman shirt on.

It took about 45 minutes until I remembered anything.  I had forgotten for a long time that my wallet and cell phone were actually in my car back at the gym.

Seinfeld was on the TV when I first got to the Hospital.  Really awesome coincidence.  The first nurse that took care of me was like a 50 year old woman.  She commented on how rare and cool it was for a "young, healthy, guy" to be in the ER. I got to go in one of the brain scan machines.   Then I got to watch the College World Series.  Also, my mom had left for Poland this day already.  And hers is the only phone number I know by memory.  That's good though, because I would have had no choice but to call her.  Now she'll never have to find out.  My tests all came back negative.  I laid there for a few hours then a taxi brought me back to my car when they discharged me.  I somehow ripped my shoulder pretty bad in the fall.  Also, my tongue is really hurt and swollen from biting it.

Back To Present:  Okay, so I did eventually tell my mom about it.  She reacted as one might expect.  NBD, we'll see how the doctor's appointment goes.  My tongue is finally almost recovered.  My shoulder is still problematic.  My brain is okay.  I've had this weird olfactory sort of Deja Vu ever since the incident.  It's like I will smell something and then have random memories from like 15 years ago flood back to me.

I think from now on I'll do a better job of recognizing "the aura".  I've had times before when I've exercised to the point of feeling totally drained, where I thought I might pass out or something.  But this was sort of a perfect storm.  Had some sleep deprivation (in fact I had been complaining about how tired I was all that morning, a rarity for a jackelope like me), and drank that coffee for the first time since I started working.  And I probably should have skipped the workout, or atleast quit working out when I felt my energy going down mid-way through.  I remember nothing of the gym, but I had to be laying there atleast 10 minutes. It's sort of embarrassing to think about.  I haven't gone back to that gym, I've gone to the one down the street instead.  I'll let the dust settle at my previous frequented gym first.  Oh well, I've been complaining about Deja Vu for years, including on this blog, and apparently that's sort of a symptom.  I'll roll full disclosure mode with the doctor on Friday and take it from there.  Life just goes on.
