  • Top Ten Movies

I now present my definitive list of the Top Ten Movies.

Disclaimer: This list does not necessarily represent what I think are the ten best movies of all-time as far as quality, acting, storyline, etc. go.  Also, they don't necessarily represent my favorite movies; for instance, a movie I identify with my childhood may be one of my favorites, but does not necessarily warrant inclusion.  So, this list represents more of a hybrid between what I consider the best movies, and what movies are among my favorites.

    1. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
    - The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly stands as a milestone in motion picture.  Sergio Leone's masterpiece, it sets an unmatched atmosphere with the distinctive western shots and Ennio Morricone's classic score.  The irreplaceable title characters play perfectly with eachother, culminating in one of the most memorable shootouts ever filmed.

    2. The Shawshank Redemption
    -  This story, spanning some 20 years, is one of the most original and inspirational stories I can remember.  This character-driven film contains an incredible plot with an unforgettable climax beautifully coupled with Morgan Freeman's narration.  If you can watch that without getting goosebumps, you don't have a soul.

    3. A Clockwork Orange
    -  As a 1970's "in the not so distant future" story, A Clockwork Orange has a style all of its own.  From the crazy costumes, the classical music, to the original vernacular, this movie takes you on a truly unique ride.

    4. Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
    -   With a charm that only a British film could have, and a plotline that runs like a Mobius strip, LSTSB is pure fun.  The quick witty dialogue and perfect ensemble cast makes this a total joy to watch again and again.

    5. The Usual Suspects
    -   This is the kind of movie you have to watch twice, almost like two movies in one.  The cast, including Kevin Spacey, and a memorable performance from Benecio Del Toro, drives this movie through the crime caper plot all the way past the unbelievable plot twist.  The Usual Suspects also contains the story of Keyser Soze, one of the most intriguing original characters in modern film.

    6. Back to the Future
    -   The quintessential time-travel story, Back to the Future is a great movie that's become intertwined with our society's pop culture.

    7. Unforgiven
    -   A gritty realistic film full of unforgettable characters, Unforgiven is a classic story of an anti-hero, and represents Clint Eastwood's crowning achievement.

    8. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy - A trilogy with an unparalleled ambitious scope that meets and exceeds any possible expectations, it has become the greatest epic on film.

    9. Groundhog Day
    -   A movie that is way more than it appears, and alot more than the sum of its parts.  Groundhog is a hilarious film with a few extra layers.

    10. Memento
    -   Being totally unique by going backwards serves a purpose in this brilliant film.  The unusual presentation might make your mind have to work a little to keep up, but it's well worth it.

    Honorable Mentions:
    Clerks.
    LA Confidential
    28 Days Later
    Braveheart
Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
