Chapter 1: The Blockbuster
I was floating over glowing grey clouds when a shrill shriek sliced through the night and snapped my eyelids open. The dreamy haze loosened its grip on my mind and I quickly regained my bearings. Oftentimes, some horrid sound would travel over the desert, bounce off the cavern walls, seek out my cave, and blast its way to my ears - jarring me from sleep. I’d curse the anonymous beast that caused it, then roll over into my blankets and back into slumber – the only peace I knew those days.
But, Oh. Something different about this. I uncurled myself and clamored to my knees, listening. But there was nothing more. Just the whistle of the wind perpetually rearranging the sands – a sound I’d grown far too accustomed to. I realized that what had broken the desert chorus that night wasn’t the usual hound howling off in the distance or even a boulder losing its battle with gravity and careening down the gorge. It was something intimately unfamiliar.
In this excitement and curiosity I rushed to my feet – knowing not what to do but knowing I had to do something. My head grew light and my heart hurried to compensate. But it was too late and the pitch black swirled around me. My knees met the ground, then came my hands, and my head. The Buzzing grew as my consciousness faded. I contemplated the sound, trying to store the memory, and at the last second before I recessed into unconscious, my mind’s recesses came forth with the verdict – It was human.
